Since the start in 1998, Integrum has been helping individuals with amputations towards an improved life quality.

A thorough experience in osseointegration has generated a system for bone-anchored prostheses – a beneficial alternative to the traditionally used socket prosthesis. Integrum is world-leading in this area, with patients treated in Centers of Excellence all across the world.

Performing continuous research and development, Integrum aims at providing safe medical devices, supporting a more active lifestyle and improving quality of life. The OPRA™ Implant System has been used in over 1,000 surgeries.

At Integrum, we believe mobility should never mean compromise. For over 25 years, we’ve been dedicated to transforming the lives of amputees by offering solutions that address the pain, frustration, and limitations of traditional socket prosthetics.

Our goal is simple: to provide an option that supports comfort, stability, and greater confidence in everyday movement.

Our Story

Osseointegration is the process that allows a prosthesis to be anchored directly to the bone. The concept was first discovered in the early 1960s by Swedish professor Per-Ingvar Brånemark, who found that titanium can integrate naturally with living bone tissue rather than being rejected by the body.

He combined the Latin words os (bone) and integrare (to unite) to describe this process — a direct structural connection between bone and implant.

Osseointegration was first used in dental implants and became the foundation of modern implant dentistry. Over time, the technology expanded to include facial prosthetics and bone-anchored hearing systems.

After the first surgery 1990 the continued development of bone anchored prosthesis has been pioneered by Dr. Rickard Brånemark. He created the foundation for the OPRA™ Implant System, and is today considered a world authority in the field.

Guided by science, driven by patient outcomes

Dr. Per-Ingvar Brånemark’s discovery that titanium can integrate with living bone through osseointegration led to the first transfemoral bone-anchored prosthetic surgery in 1990. This milestone demonstrated that direct skeletal anchorage could be used for individuals with limb loss.

Building on this foundation, Integrum was founded in 1998 by Dr. Rickard Branemark to further develop and advance this technology. The OPRA™ Implant System was introduced in 1999 and continues to evolve through ongoing research, clinical collaboration, and long-term follow-up.

We are guided by science, driven by empathy, and focused on delivering life-changing results. By listening to users and understanding their challenges, we ensure our innovations meet their needs today while paving the way for tomorrow. With the OPRA™ Implant System, we aim to do more than restore mobility—we strive to empower individuals to live their lives to the fullest, taking each step with confidence and independence.

FDA approval

The OPRA™ Implant System received FDA Premarket Approval (PMA) in 2020 for individuals with above-the-knee (transfemoral) amputation. Prior to PMA approval, the system was available in the United States under a Humanitarian Device Exemption (HDE) beginning in 2015, which allowed limited clinical use for patients with specific needs.

Together, these FDA pathways reflect years of clinical evaluation supporting the safety and effectiveness of this osseointegrated, bone-anchored prosthetic solution.
